Brampton Valley Way, Creaton & Teeton

Northamptonshire's Rolling Countryside

Introduction

This petal based on the Northamptonshire Round offers the choice of a 10 mile or a 13.5 mile walk, (16 km or 21.5 km). There are several options for starting as shown in the description below although we have assumed the car park on the Spratton Road.

The route is best followed using the Ordnance Survey Explorer map 223 or the Landranger maps 141 and 152.

Stage 1

There is car parking and a picnic spot available from this start point.

Spratton Road car park to Glebe Farm up the Brampton way is a short ¾ mile stretch but it needs your decision as to which walk you would like to tackle.  The going is good along the old rail track but beware of the over enthusiastic or inexperienced cyclist.  At Glebe Farm there is a choice of the 13½ mile or 10 mile route.  For the 10 mile route go to stage 3 below.

Brixworth Village is worth visiting, with the Coach and Horses pub and a Saxon Church, if you have the time and energy although it is off the route of this walk.

Stage 2 (13½ mile route)

Continue up the Brampton Valley Way for a further 1½ miles to Houghton Crossing and take the footpath to your left, (going west).

(There is limited car parking from Hanging Houghton village at this point and thus could be an option for a start point.)

Follow the track across the fields to Blueberry Grange where you turn left again, joining the Macmillan Way heading Southwest.  After ¾ mile you should meet the Cottesbrooke Road, go straight across following the Footpath to Creaton.  On reaching the village continue in the same direction passing the church to your left onto the A5199, Welford Road.

This could be a good starting point but there is only roadside parking available.

There is a pub stop, Bricklayer's Arms serving food, drinks, teas, coffees etc. just to the left on the A5199 when you meet the road.

Creaton has a shop and post office 100 yards on the left in High Street.

Stage 3 (10 mile route)

The shorter route uses the Creaton - Brixworth Road between Glebe Farm and Creaton Grange Farm.  Just after going under the road bridge take the footpath to the right, sign post to Brixworth Village and Creaton Road, and turn right on meeting the road.  100 yards along the road take the left-hand fork past Corn Mill.  Follow this road to the outskirts of Creaton, (it is normally light on traffic but take the normal good precautions).  On reaching the village turn right along the road and rejoin the route at the Y junction, bearing left past the church to the Welford Road.

Stage 4

Take the footpath opposite the road out of the village still following the Macmillan Way for just over a mile until you reach a minor road running between Teeton and Guilsborough.  Turn left and follow the road round the southern outskirts of Teeton.  At the second cross roads turn right towards Holdenby North Lodge.  Follow this minor road to the North Lodge Cottages and turn left, (east) for 600yards.  When the road turns sharp left continue on the track the other side of the hedge towards Cank Farm.

Stage 5

From Cank Farm past Sander's Covert and watch for the split of the footpath by the next copse.  Take the left-hand path keeping the triangular covert to the right.  After 200 yards you will come to the confluence of 5 footpaths, (this is where you join up with the Northamptonshire Round), take the second footpath going clockwise, continuing in basically the same direction, until you meet the track to Brampton Hill Farm.  Turn left on this track to the main road.  Turn left up the A5199, Welford Road for approximately 50 yards, then take the footpath heading Northeast and track back to Merry Tom Crossing.

This is not a recommended starting point due to the lack of parking space.

For the thirsty who can manage a ¾ mile each way diversion, if you turn right here you can walk to the Brampton Valley Halt where liquid and solid refreshments are available.

Stage 6

You are now back on the Brampton Valley Way and it is an easy 2 mile stroll back to the car park.

We trust you enjoyed the walk and look forward to you visiting the Ten Foot Club Petals web site on www.tenfootclubwalks.org.uk/
